Antiarrhythmic Drugs

An arrhythmia is an irregular or abnormal heart rhythm. Antiarrhythmic medications act on the electrical conduction system within your heart to keep your heart in normal (sinus) rhythm and decrease the number of arrhythmias you have. There are many different types of antiarrhythmic medications, and your doctor will work with you to choose the most appropriate one for your treatment plan.

Sodium Channel Blockers

flecainide (Tambocor); propafenone (Rhythmol)

Potassium Channel Blockers

sotalol (Betapace); dofetilide (Tikosyn); dronedarone (Multaq); amiodarone (Pacerone)

Sotalol (Betapace) and dofetilide (Tikosyn) are started in the hospital and require a 3-day stay. The hospital team will closely monitor you for any abnormal heart rhythms during this time.
