Pancreas/kidney transplantation

We’re one of the few programs that perform kidney/pancreas transplants in patients with type II diabetes.

If you have advanced diabetic disease, a pancreas transplant can help you regain optimal health and improve your quality of life. Pancreas transplant surgery is primarily performed as a part of treating diabetes and is often performed while undergoing a kidney transplant as simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) or pancreas after a kidney transplant (PAK).

Individuals with type 1 diabetes with relatively normal kidney function who suffer from frequent, severe episodes of hypoglycemic unawareness and the loss of consciousness from low blood sugar may also benefit from solitary pancreas transplantation (PTA).

As one of the premier pancreatic transplant programs in the Southeast, Piedmont consistently ranks among the best in the region and nationwide. Our patients experience dramatically shorter wait times for pancreas transplantation: 8.2 months compared to the national average of 13.7 months.
