Age spots

Are age spots dangerous?

Sunspots, age spots, liver spots...whatever you called them, those pesky brown marks may be inevitable with every birthday you celebrate.

What do age spots look like?

These small pigmented spots usually have the following characteristics:

  • Brown or tan in color
  • Range in size from a freckle to more than 1/2 inch in diameter
  • Form in clusters
  • Clearly defined edges
  • Appear on the backs of hands, face, shoulders, and upper back

Are age spots harmful?

Because these spots appear where your skin is most exposed, they may bruise your ego, but this is as harmful as they get.

Michelle Hix, a medical assistant at Piedmont Physicians Group, says, “You may not like the way they look, but the good news is age spots are usually harmless and don't require medical care.”

When do age spots appear?

Sunspots typically appear in your 40s, but can occur earlier if you live in a sunny climate, have a fair complexion or spend a lot of time driving. Hix says people who drive for extended periods of time, like truck drivers, are prime candidates for sunspots on their arms and face because the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can come through an automobile’s windows and windshield.

Minimizing age spots

There are no treatments that have been shown to reverse aging, but Hix stresses that the simple daily application of sunscreen is the most effective way to slow down the process of developing sunspots.

“There are cosmetic ways to lighten sunspots, as well as prescription creams and even laser treatments,” says Hix. “Sunspots are part of the natural aging process, so it is hard to avoid them, but you can certainly try to slow them down by being sun-smart.”

Hix recommends implementing other sun-safety measures like wearing a hat outdoors, wearing clothes that filter UV rays, and reapplying SPF 50 sunscreen throughout the day.

When to see a dermatologist for age spots

While these spots usually present no harm, Hix recommends seeing a dermatologist to rule out skin cancer if you notice your age spots are growing, developing uneven borders, or changing in any way. He or she can also offer cosmetic options that may improve the appearance of age spots, such as laser treatments, chemical peels or dermabrasion.
