Our approach

Our first step in treating prostate cancer is accurate diagnosis through imaging or biopsy.

Prostate cancer symptoms usually occur when the enlarged gland presses on the urinary tract and may cause:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Painful urination
  • Frequent nighttime urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Difficulty achieving an erection

These symptoms can also be due to benign prostate enlargement or urinary tract infections, so it's important to consult a doctor. Since prostate cancer can be asymptomatic, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is often used for screening.

Diagnosing prostate cancer

If prostate cancer is suspected, your physician may recommend:

  • Ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to create images of the prostate and helps determine cancer presence when PSA levels are high or a nodule is found.
  • MRI: This imaging technique creates detailed pictures of the prostate and is used to assess the extent of diagnosed cancer, though some patients with implants may not be eligible.

If cancer is suspected, multiple needle biopsies will be performed to collect tissue samples, which a pathologist will analyze to confirm the presence of cancer and evaluate its aggressiveness. This information is essential for developing a customized treatment plan.
