Skin cancer screenings

Skin cancer treatment starts with adequate and aggressive screening by your dermatologist. Prevention and early detection are key.

Types of skin cancer

The three main types of skin cancer include:

  • Melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma

While melanoma accounts for only 1% of skin cancers, it causes the most skin cancer-related deaths. Melanoma can spread to nearby tissues and other parts of the body if it is not diagnosed early.

Rates of melanoma have been rising rapidly over the past few decades, and it is one of the most common cancers in young adults. It’s 20 times more common in white people than in African Americans. It’s also more common in men overall, but more prevalent in women under age 50.
