Prostate cancer genetic risk

Hereditary risk factors for prostate cancer
Approximately 5-10% of prostate cancer is hereditary, which means it is caused by an inherited gene mutation that runs in a family. Genetic counselors are available at Piedmont Oncology to help determine if genetic testing for inherited prostate cancer risk would be beneficial for you and your family.
If you or a close family member (on either side of the family) have had any of the following, you may benefit from genetic counseling for prostate cancer risk:
- Prostate cancer in multiple close relatives
- Prostate cancer, as well as a family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, and/or pancreatic cancer
- Eastern European Jewish (Ashkenazi Jewish) ancestry
- Metastatic prostate cancer
- Prostate cancer is categorized as “high risk” or “very high risk” in pathology
