Organ insurance financial considerations

Overview
Transplant requires a life-long commitment on the part of patients and their supporters. Understanding insurance coverage, planning for transplant-related costs and managing expenses can help patients care for themselves after transplant.
General transplant costs
- Transplant evaluation (including medical tests and procedures)
- Transplant surgery and hospitalization
- Follow-up care, including tests, physician visits and rehabilitation
- Immunosuppressants and other medications (pre- and post-transplant)
Depending on health insurance coverage, these costs may be covered in full or partly by an insurance plan. Patients are advised to take the time to investigate their insurance benefits. Be aware of co-payment responsibilities, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums and coverage limits.
In addition to medical costs, there are some other potential cost areas to consider. These may include child care, insurance premiums, lost wages, lodging and meals for patients and caregivers.
All transplant patients are advised to make long-term financial plans for transplant. Patients with financial or insurance concerns are often encouraged to fundraise. This can help create a financial safety net for post-transplant expenses. Your transplant social worker can help you with the financial planning as well.
