Piedmont Athens Regional Plans for Renovation and Expansion

Athens, Ga. (March 21, 2018) – This week, Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center announced plans for a $171 million expansion and renovation project.

The proposed construction project will include the renovation of approximately 262,436 square feet of existing space and the replacement of approximately 228,691 square feet of space, which includes replacing a 100-year-old building with a new, four-story patient tower.

“This project is critical to continuing our long tradition of serving our community,” said Charles Peck, M.D., president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Piedmont Athens Regional. “Our goal is not only to improve patient access and care, but to also modernize and improve our hospital campus for our patients, visitors and staff.”

Construction will also include adding a new patient unit or floor to an existing hospital tower. Patient areas added will replace areas removed during construction, and the hospital's capacity will remain at 359 beds.

Piedmont Athens Regional is currently seeking project approval from the Georgia Department of Community Health. Once approved, construction is estimated to take over three years, with a completion date of August 2022.

“We’re confident that these enhancements will make things better and easier for our patients, we are grateful for the community’s support as we work to meet the needs of our patients,” Dr. Peck said.
