Atrial fibrillation is a very common heart rhythm abnormality in which the heart beats in a very irregular and chaotic manner. It is often, but not always, rapid. Common symptoms include sensations of a racing or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and weakness. Some patients have no symptoms.
An ECG (electrocardiogram) is the first step in evaluating a patient. A visit to the doctor can determine if an additional evaluation or treatment is needed.
