Rate-Controlling Drugs

Atrial fibrillation (AF) can sometimes cause your heart to beat too fast. Rate-controlling medications can be used to help keep your heart rate within a normal range. There are many different types of rate-controlling medications, and your doctor will work with you to choose the most appropriate one for your treatment plan.

Beta Blockers (BB)

metoprolol (Toprol-XL, Lopressor); carvedilol (Coreg); atenolol (Tenormin); nebivolol (Bystolic); bisoprolol (Zebeta); nadolol (Corgard); propanolol (Inderal); and several others

Calcium Channel Blockers (CCB)

diltiazem (Cardizem, Tiazac); verapamil (Calan, Verelan)
