Pancreas cancer genetic risk

Hereditary risk factors for pancreatic cancer

Approximately 10% of pancreatic cancer is hereditary, meaning it is caused by an inherited gene mutation that runs in families. Piedmont Oncology genetic counselors can help determine whether testing for inherited pancreatic cancer risk may benefit you and your family.

If you or a close family member had pancreatic cancer, you may benefit from genetic counseling for pancreatic cancer risk.

The chance for pancreatic cancer to be hereditary is higher if any of the following are present:

  • Pancreatic cancer in multiple close relatives
  • A family history of melanoma, breast, ovarian, prostate, colon, uterine, stomach and/or other cancers
  • Ashkenazi Jewish (Eastern European Jewish) ancestry
  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and additional endocrine tumors
