It’s normal to feel worried, confused and overwhelmed if you or a loved one suffers from a neurological condition, such as a stroke. Our team at Piedmont Atlanta’s neuro-intensive care unit (neuro ICU) is specially trained to help you navigate this journey, offering compassion, education and the highest level of care to support recovery.
What is a neuro ICU?
Our neuro ICU provides exceptional neurocritical care for individuals with serious neurological conditions, like stroke. It serves as an essential component of Piedmont’s comprehensive stroke center.
Our neuro ICU offers:
- Specialized staffing: We have a highly skilled and compassionate team of health care professionals, including neurointensivists, endovascular neurosurgeons, cranial neurosurgeons, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and rehabilitation specialists. Our team collaborates closely to ensure you receive the best possible care tailored to your unique needs.
- Close monitoring and observation: Patients in our neuro ICU require intensive and constant monitoring because of the critical nature of their conditions. Our nursing staff conducts frequent assessments, monitors neurological signs and closely observes responses to treatments and interventions.
- Specialized equipment: Our neuro ICU is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring technology to continuously track vital signs, brain activity, intracranial pressure and brain tissue oxygenation. Continuous monitoring helps detect changes in a patient's condition early and allows for timely intervention. We are also equipped with a CT scanner in the unit and have access to MRI scanners here at Piedmont Atlanta to diagnose and treat our patients when seconds matter most.
- Tailored treatment plans: Our goal is to work with you on your journey to recovery, helping you regain function and achieve the best possible outcomes. During your stay, you’ll have access to specialized treatments and therapies, including 24/7 neurosurgery, medications to control seizures or manage brain swelling, management of life support devices and rehabilitation strategies to optimize neurologic recovery.
- Rehabilitation services: In our neuro ICU, early rehabilitation services are integrated into the care plan to help patients regain function and improve their quality of life after a neurological event or surgery. This may involve physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and consultations with physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
- Family support and education: Your comfort, well-being and progress are our top priorities. We are dedicated to ensuring your stay in our neuro ICU is as comfortable and beneficial as possible, and we look forward to being a part of your healing and recovery process. Our neuro ICU also provides support and education to the families of patients. This includes updates on the patient's condition, explanations of treatments and procedures, guidance on what to expect, and assistance in making informed decisions regarding the patient's care. A case manager is assigned to every patient to help families navigate and plan post-discharge living arrangements. We also have a chaplain who is part of our multidisciplinary team.
