Pediatric Services at Piedmont Athens Regional
The Pediatrics Unit at Piedmont Athens Regional serves children from birth through age 18 and young adults.
- Eighteen bed pediatric unit, managing up to a high level of patient acuity, including medical and surgical care, along with video EEG monitoring.
- A five-plus bed Pediatric Outpatient Services department within our Pediatric unit (also known as “POPS”) that provides outpatient infusions and injections, phlebotomy, catheterization, and other lab orders, imaging facilitation (excluding CT and MRI), respiratory treatments, central line care, and more.
- Dedicated Pediatric Hospitalists
Our Pediatric Hospitalists are board-certified in pediatric medicine with extensive pediatric experience. Our physicians know how to treat our pediatric patients, from being hands-on with their care to calming a frightened child or caregiver.
- Pediatric Specialty Resources
Pediatric specialists are available to our physicians as needed. These include Neurology, Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, ENT, and others.
- Certified Pediatric Nurses with experience
- Certified Child Life Specialist
Piedmont Athens Regional’s Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) provides developmentally appropriate play, preparation, education, and support for infants, children, adolescents, and their families to promote optimal psycho-social development and to reduce fear and anxiety associated with illness and health care experiences.

Piedmont Athens Regional’s Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) provides developmentally appropriate play, preparation, education, and support for infants, children, adolescents, and their families to promote optimal psycho-social development and to reduce fear and anxiety associated with illness and health care experiences.
Individualized assessments and developmentally appropriate care provided include:
- Normative, therapeutic, and medical play
- Preparation and support for surgery and medical procedures
- Diagnosis education
- Plans for coping with illness, hospitalization, or stressful life experiences
- Relaxation and non-pharmacological pain management techniques
- End of life and bereavement support
