Piedmont Rockdale surpasses 1,000 robotic gynecological surgeries, expanding access to advanced care for women

Conyers, Ga. (February 23, 2026) – Piedmont Rockdale Hospital recently celebrated completing more than 1,000 gynecological procedures using the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system. This marks a significant milestone and reflects the hospital’s commitment to expanding access to advanced, minimally invasive surgical options for patients in Rockdale County.
Piedmont Rockdale acquired the da Vinci Xi robot in 2022. Since then, surgeons have used it for gynecological procedures like hysterectomies, myomectomies (fibroid removals), pelvic organ prolapse repairs, and endometriosis removals. The robot is also used for other minimally invasive surgery cases, such as colon resections, prostate removals, hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, and appendectomies.
During the robotic procedures, surgeons sit at a console in the operating room that provides a magnified, 3D view of the patient’s anatomy. They use hand controls to guide the robot’s instruments, allowing for smaller incisions and greater range of motion than open or laparoscopic surgery.
“Many of our surgical patients have experienced years of uncontrolled symptoms, including pain and bleeding,” said Timothy Cowthorn, D.O., an obstetrician/gynecologist with extensive experience in robotic surgeries at Piedmont Rockdale. “This technology allows us to address their issues with incredible precision, leading to better outcomes and quicker recoveries. It can be lifechanging for patients.”
