Each year, strokes kill more than 150,000 people in the United States. When strokes don't kill, they injure. Nationwide, strokes are the leading cause of adult disability, affecting more than six million adults.

What are the warning signs of a stroke?

If you or a loved one experiences any of the following symptoms, call 911 immediately. Remember the acronym BE FAST:

  • Balance problems, including dizziness or loss of coordination
  • Eye problems, including blurred vision, double vision or vision loss
  • Face symptoms, including drooping or numbness on one side of the face
  • Arm or leg numbness or weakness
  • Speech difficulty, including slurred speech, trouble speaking or inability to speak
  • Time to call 911

Strokes can be sudden and cause injury or even death, but our stroke experts are highly trained to provide superior medical treatment to help identify and manage them. Our stroke team includes:

Stroke center

  • Piedmont Atlanta and Piedmont Augusta are certified as Comprehensive Stroke Centers by DNV GL Healthcare for stroke management.
  • Piedmont Athens Regional, Piedmont Atlanta, Piedmont Augusta, Piedmont Fayette, Piedmont Henry, Piedmont Macon Medical Center, Piedmont Macon North Hospital and Piedmont Newnan are certified Primary Stroke Centers and accredited by DNV GL Healthcare for stroke management.
  • Piedmont Eastside is certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.
  • Piedmont Rockdale  is certified as a Primary Stroke-Ready Hospital by DNV GL Healthcare.
  • Piedmont Columbus Regional offers advanced treatment for stroke by performing mechanical thrombectomies.
  • Piedmont Newton and Piedmont Walton are designated as Remote Stroke Treatment Centers by the Georgia Department of Public Health.
  • Piedmont Cartersville Hospital is a certified Primary Stroke Center and Level III Trauma Center.
