Admissions and Application Process
Piedmont Athens Regional Transitional Year Residency Program accepts highly qualified residents for its training program.
Applicants should possess the following qualities to be able to perform the essential functions of the specialty and meet the standards of the curriculum:

Successful candidates exhibit strong qualifications for the Transitional Year.
Our residency program application requirements are:
- Register for a first-year residency position with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
- Complete an ERAS application.
- Personal Statement
- Curriculum Vitae
- Recent photograph
- Medical School Transcripts (to be provided by medical school)
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), formerly known as the Dean’s Letter (to be provided by medical school)
- Three letters of recommendation from supervising faculty who know you well and can comment in depth on your clinical work, achievement, leadership, personal qualities, and project contributions.
- USMLE and/or COMLEX transcripts (to be provided by National Boards)
- USMLE Step 1 is required for the application, and USMLE Step 2 CK is required prior to the end of the interview season.
- ECFMG Status Report (international graduates only, to be provided by ECFMG)
- We do accept international graduates.
Personal Interview
Candidates need to recognize that physicians matriculating into the Piedmont Athens Regional Transitional Year Residency Program are expected to: complete satisfactorily ALL of their medical school’s requirements culminating in graduation from medical school in good standing; provide proof of graduation from medical school; and be eligible for a training license as a resident physician in the State of Georgia.
Interviews
- Candidates who are selected for a one-day interview on campus will be notified by e-mail.
- Interviews occur every Tuesday and Friday in January.
- Additional information, including an itinerary, will be provided for candidates selected to interview.
- Interviews for the 2023-2024 season will be held virtually.

Resident selection is accomplished via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
