Overview

Piedmont Rockdale is proud to offer a collegiate volunteer program each semester. Majors vary and include pre-med, pre-nursing, education, business, health care administration, public health, psychology and more. Student volunteers serve at least four hours per week on a regular schedule, for approximately 10-13 weeks (depending on the semester).

Accepted applicants will be required to:

Submit proof of two (2) measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and two (2) varicella vaccines.
Submit proof of current influenza (flu) vaccine or complete declination form. Anyone who is not vaccinated for flu will be required to wear a mask when inside a Piedmont facility during respiratory virus seasons.
Undergo a background check.
Submit proof of a negative QuantiFERON Gold tuberculosis (TB) test (if you have a positive test, you must submit a chest X-ray results showing no TB).
Submit photo for badging.
Attend required volunteer orientation.
Submit two (2) letters of recommendation. These recommendations should come from someone not related to the student.

For continuing college student volunteers

Current college student volunteers are encouraged to volunteer for the next semester. Current volunteers will receive a request for schedules and placement preference each semester. Only current college students can “renew” this way. If there has been a gap in your status without notification to Volunteer Services, you will have to apply as a new volunteer.

Students who are enrolled in local universities, colleges, and technical schools may participate in our College Volunteer Program.
College student volunteers are placed during the first week of each semester. They volunteer 4 hours a week throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to continue working during breaks from school (such as winter holiday break, spring break, etc.) and to return for consecutive semesters of service. If multiple shifts are available in a week, volunteers will be able to sign up. Piedmont Rockdale does not set up one-time observations/visits for student volunteers. We also do not allow credit for volunteer hours toward court-related community service assignments.
Yes! Many of our college volunteers work on weekends, and some designated evening times. When you apply for the program, you will submit your availability.
The College Volunteer application is open in March (for Summer), May (for Fall), and October (for Spring). The application deadline will be posted on our website. Each new student volunteer selected to participate must pass a background check, complete an in-person volunteer orientation session, and meet all health screening requirements before beginning work. Students who do not comply will be asked to return the following semester with completed documentation.
All volunteers are required to provide proof of immunization for Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Varicella, and Influenza (during flu season). Volunteers are also required to complete a QuantiFERON Gold TB Test.
The volunteer responsibilities will be listed on the application. You will be provided with a listing of times and days volunteer assignments are available as well as department/unit descriptions. You will have the opportunity to select up to 5 departments/areas that you prefer. It’s important to note that all volunteers will have at least 1 rotation in our entrance areas and guest services area. While we do try to match you with a preferred department/unit, we may not be able to due to scheduling constraints.
The volunteer supervisor will provide parking instructions to you when you receive your placement.
Each volunteer is expected to clock in and clock out for each shift worked. Volunteers who fail to clock in will not have a complete record of hours worked. The Volunteer Services Department will provide confirmation of hours served. You may request this at any time.

Students may return to work for several semesters or even years. It is the student's responsibility to notify the Volunteer Services office of any schedule changes and if you wish to change volunteer assignments.
Recommendation letters need to be submitted to the supervisor of Volunteer Services.
The hospital desires punctual, dependable, committed individuals who can help patients, families, visitors, and staff in a variety of ways. All student volunteers are expected to dress professionally and in volunteer uniform and follow any department-specific dress codes. If volunteers can not meet and/or comply with the policies, procedures, and expectations of the hospital, they will be dismissed from the role.
While volunteer hours are required for majority of our college volunteers major, our volunteers are a critical member of Piedmont Rockdale’s family. Their presence brings a level of warmth, compassion, and humanity that makes a tangible difference for our patients, families, and staff. Whether through simple conversations, acts of kindness, or just being a calming and reassuring presence, the volunteers help create an environment that feels more supportive and healing during what can often be very difficult moments.
