PGY-2 critical care pharmacy residency at Piedmont Atlanta

Program purpose

Postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities to assume the responsibility of complex-medication related care. The residency program begins with hospital orientation on July 1st and ends the following year on June 30th. The program is designed with flexibility to support each resident's professional interests and career goals. A diverse selection of required and elective learning experiences allows residents to individualize their training while building a strong foundation in critical care practice.

Program goals

The PGY-2 Critical care residency strives to develop a well-rounded and competent critical care specialist through comprehensive clinical, educational, research, and leadership experiences.

Upon completion of the program, residents will be able to:

• Optimize medication therapy for critically ill patients through evidence-based practice
• Manage and improve medication-use processes within the health system
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams in high-acuity settings
• Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills through committee participation and departmental initiatives
• Develop teaching and precepting skills through mentorship of pharmacy students and PGY1 residents
• Contribute to medication-use evaluation, quality improvement, and research activities
• Prepare for Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist (BCCCP) certification

Program prerequisites

• Be licensed or eligible for pharmacist licensure in the State of Georgia
• Graduate from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, or possess a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)
• Successfully complete an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
• Be registered with the ASHP Resident Matching Program
• Successfully complete all required health screening and background check requirements

Applications must be submitted through PhORCAS and include:

• Letter of Intent describing the applicant's interest in pursuing a PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Three letters of recommendation, including:
• One from a Residency Program Director (RPD)
• At least one from a PGY1 clinical preceptor
• Official pharmacy school transcripts
