Your time is a valuable resource with the incredible potential to help others. How would you like to make a personal investment of your time in a place that makes a difference in our community? Hundreds of men and women of all ages have found fulfilling volunteer positions and have provided much-needed services at Piedmont Augusta since 1949. Piedmont is blessed with an amazing group of volunteers. Annually, volunteers donate more than 35,000 hours of service in over 30 hospital departments and support hospital programs, equipment, and initiatives. Whether assisting departments that support patient care or providing comfort and assistance to patients, families, and staff, Piedmont Augusta volunteers have a lasting impact on our community. Their efforts are priceless.

If you are an adult age 18 or older who is not currently enrolled in college, looking to gain experience in a healthcare setting, give back to the community, stay active as an empty nester, find purpose in retirement, or simply make a difference in the lives of others, we invite you to become part of our volunteer family. Volunteer application

Service opportunities

Piedmont Augusta offers more than 30 volunteer service areas. Available assignments are based on the volunteers' talents, abilities and interests and on the hospital's needs. Certain volunteer positions require additional training. Volunteer areas include:

  • Transportation
  • Sunshine Gift Shop
  • Uniform Shop
  • Information Centers
  • Coffee Cart
  • Needlework: Items for patients
  • Clerical/Office Assistant
  • Emergency Department
  • Endoscopy Department
  • Patient Care Areas
  • Breast Health Center

Requirements to volunteer

Adult volunteers must:

  • Complete a volunteer application
  • Attend a New Volunteer Orientation
  • Complete a background check
  • Make an Employee Health appointment
  • Purchase a volunteer uniform
  • Give at least six hours a month to a designated service. Volunteers are recognized annually for their service during National Volunteer Week.

Volunteer board

Piedmont Augusta certainly could not offer the same level of service to patients and their families without the support in hours and dollars of our Volunteer Board. The Volunteer Board of Piedmont Augusta is an organization that provides Piedmont Augusta with volunteer service; funds, which are raised through in-house businesses and fundraising events; and promoting Piedmont Augusta to the communities our hospital serves. Since 1949, the Volunteer Board of Piedmont Augusta has contributed more than $10 million to the hospital.

Applications are currently closed. 

College volunteers

Winter/Spring application process is open September 28 through October 30, or until the program is full. 

Students must fill out an application and agreement form and send it to Amanda.Bishop@piedmont.org. Phone interviews will take place after the application process is complete.

Program

The Piedmont Augusta College Volunteer Program provides currently enrolled college students with the opportunity to gain experience in a health care setting while supporting patients, visitors and staff throughout the hospital. Volunteers serve in a variety of clinical and non-clinical departments and contribute to the hospital's mission of providing excellent patient care. 

College Volunteers are current college students who volunteer during one of our seasonal programs:

  • Fall program
  • Winter/Spring program
  • Summer program

Volunteers must apply for each program period and meet all onboarding requirements. Returning volunteers do need to fill out an application and agreement form. Other information may need to be updated if it has been longer than 60 days since they last volunteered with us. 

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college or university and be able to meet the program's volunteer commitment and onboarding requirements.

Program structure

College volunteers commit to a regular volunteer schedule and are required to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week, totaling approximately 45 hours during the semester-long program. Volunteers may be assigned to both clinical and non-clinical service areas and may rotate between placements based on departmental needs.

Program dates: winter/spring

January 5, 2027, through April 23, 2027. Volunteers observe Augusta University holidays and break during the semester.

Orientation

All accepted volunteers must attend one of the following orientation sessions prior to beginning service:

December 8 or December 10,4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  

Onboarding schedule

  • Spring semester volunteers: January
  • Summer semester volunteers: May
  • Fall semester volunteers: August

Program fees and uniform

  • All accepted volunteers must complete a background check, orientation, and all onboarding requirements before beginning service.
  • Program fee: $40 (covers the cost of the required background check)
  • College volunteer uniform T-shirt: $20
  • The official college volunteer program T-shirt must be purchased through the Uniform Shop and worn while volunteering.

Volunteer opportunities

College volunteers may serve in a variety of hospital departments, including both clinical and non-clinical areas. Placement is based on volunteer interests, availability, department needs and program availability. During the application process, students will have the opportunity to indicate their preferred service areas.

We view volunteering as a long-term commitment and seek individuals who will serve for years to come. Volunteer Services of Piedmont Augusta does not place community service volunteers.
