Piedmont Walton uses inflatable colon to educate community about colorectal cancer

Monroe, Ga. (March 4, 2026) – The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 158,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer in 2026, with rising rates among younger adults in recent years. Colorectal cancer remains the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women combined, with an estimated 55,000 deaths expected this year.
To increase awareness and encourage early detection during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Piedmont Walton is bringing back its popular educational exhibit. A giant inflatable colon will be on display in the hospital’s main lobby from Tuesday, March 3 through Friday, March 6.
“Education is one of our most powerful tools in reducing colorectal cancer,” said Mehul Parikh, M.D., a gastroenterologist with Piedmont Physicians Gastroenterology Loganville. “Colorectal cancer is highly preventable when detected early, and screenings truly save lives. Giving people a clear understanding of what happens during a colonoscopy helps reduce fear and encourages them to get screened.”
This walk‑through exhibit provides a close‑up look at the development of colorectal disease. Visitors can explore the structure of a healthy colon, view examples of polyps and early cancer, and learn what gastroenterologists look for during a colonoscopy. Hospital staff will be on hand to answer questions about screening guidelines, symptoms, risk factors and prevention.
Throughout the week, Piedmont Walton will also provide information on prevention strategies, including lifestyle recommendations and how to schedule a screening.
