Piedmont Walton's surgical team celebrate a milestone in their robotic surgical services.

Monroe, Ga. (January 16, 2026) – Piedmont Walton Hospital recently announced that its surgical team has surpassed 1,600 robotic procedures, marking a significant milestone in advancing minimally invasive care for patients in the region.

The hospital’s robotic surgery program, which uses the DaVinci Xi system, supports general surgery, gynecology and bariatric surgery. Surgeons perform a wide range of procedures robotically, including colectomies for colon conditions, hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, appendectomies, hysterectomies, and bariatric surgeries. These minimally invasive techniques often result in smaller incisions, less pain and a faster recovery than traditional surgery.

“Robotic surgery allows us to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision and control,” said Mark Benak, MD, a general surgeon at Piedmont Walton. “Patients benefit from shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to normal activities.”

Since completing his robotic training in May 2025, Dr. Benak has performed 104 robotic cases. Other surgeons at Piedmont Walton have also reached impressive milestones, contributing to the program’s total of more than 1,600 cases.
