Monroe, Ga. (February 25, 2026) – Members of the community recently met at the Walton County YMCA for a lunch and learn focused on weight-management led by Donald Maynard, MD, a bariatric surgeon at Piedmont Walton. Dr. Maynard shared practical guidance on weight management, including lifestyle strategies and the medical options available to support healthier living.

The lunch and learn is part of the growing partnership between Piedmont Walton and the Walton County YMCA to expand community-focused health education led by Piedmont Walton Community Education Nurse Susie Payne. Many of the health education sessions are open to the public and YMCA membership is not required.

“Our goal is to make health information as accessible as possible,” Payne said. “Good health shouldn’t come with barriers, and partnerships like this help us empower more people in our community.”

Upcoming session: Understanding radon poisoning

The next lunch and learn will be facilitated by the UGA Extension Office and will focus on radon poisoning- what it is, why it matters and how families can protect themselves. Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in indoor air and well water, and it is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

The session will take place Thursday, March 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Walton County YMCA boardroom.
