Piedmont Rockdale unveils upgraded cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab

Conyers, Ga. (October 7, 2026) – Piedmont Rockdale Hospital has completed a $2.7 million upgrade to its cardiac catheterization lab, enhancing the hospital’s ability to provide advanced interventional cardiology, vascular, and electrophysiology (EP) procedures for patients in Rockdale County and surrounding communities.
“Our community deserves access to advanced cardiovascular care without having to travel far from home,” said Piedmont Rockdale CEO Monica Hum, MD. “This investment builds on Piedmont’s nationally recognized heart care and brings more treatment options to the patients we serve.”
Cardiac catheterization (“cath”) labs are specialized procedure suites where physicians diagnose and treat heart and vascular conditions using minimally invasive techniques. During Piedmont’s Fiscal Year 2026 (July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026), care teams performed more than 3,600 procedures across the hospital’s two cath labs, reflecting strong demand for cardiovascular services. Piedmont Rockdale’s cath labs are equipped to remove pulmonary embolisms, potentially life-threatening blood clots in the lungs, with support from a dedicated response team available 24/7, rare service offerings outside of large hospitals.
Piedmont Rockdale’s upgraded lab features state-of-the-art technology designed to enhance imaging, support greater procedural precision, and improve efficiency for care teams. In addition to supporting interventional cardiology and vascular procedures, the space now includes advanced EP capabilities, allowing physicians to evaluate and treat disorders of the heart’s electrical system.
The enhanced lab will enable Piedmont Rockdale to perform various EP procedures, including cardiac ablations for patients with arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). Cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that targets abnormal electrical signals in the heart to help restore a normal rhythm, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life.
Abdullah Omar, MD, a board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist with Piedmont Heart of Rockdale, will perform the procedures.
“In the past, patients had to travel to Atlanta to receive advanced EP procedures such as cardiac ablations,” Dr. Omar said. “Bringing these services to Piedmont Rockdale will make specialized care more accessible, comfortable, and convenient for patients in our community.”
The upgrade reflects Piedmont Rockdale’s continued commitment to expanding access to specialty services and meeting the growing healthcare needs of Rockdale County.
