Athens, Ga. (August 12, 2026) -- Piedmont Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Athens has named Hayden Williams, a rising junior football player at Oglethorpe County High School, its Athlete of the Month in recognition of his determination, discipline and perseverance throughout a lengthy recovery from a complete ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear.

Williams suffered a non-contact pivot injury during a football game in late September of his sophomore year, resulting in a complete ACL tear that required reconstructive surgery. His care team included orthopedic surgeon Rob Willson, MD, physician assistant Kristina Boccucci, and physical therapist Justin Stewart.

"Hayden's commitment to his recovery was remarkable from day one," Stewart said. "He consistently followed every part of his rehabilitation plan and was determined to return stronger than before. In fact, one of the biggest challenges for our team was reminding him not to rush the process. His work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to do everything asked of him played a major role in his successful recovery."

Following surgery, Williams began a comprehensive rehabilitation program under Stewart's guidance. He progressed from post-operative care on crutches to regaining independence with daily activities during the first months of therapy. After four months of rehabilitation, he advanced to strength training and eventually returned to jogging. By six months, Dr. Willson noted Williams was excelling in physical therapy, and by the time he was cleared to begin football-specific agility training at nine months, he had developed exceptional strength through his conditioning.

“Recovery from ACL reconstruction typically takes eight to 10 months and can even extend beyond a year, depending on the athlete and sport,” Stewart said. “Throughout the entire rehab process, Hayden remained focused on his long-term goal of returning to the football field safely. We’re excited that he’s back on the field for his junior season.”
