Piedmont Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Athens honors Athlete of the Month

Athens, Ga. (September 21, 2026) – Piedmont Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Athens has named Caroline Ellspermann, a soccer player in her junior year at Oconee County High School, its Athlete of the Month in recognition of her determination and resilience throughout a challenging recovery following a serious knee injury.
Ellspermann suffered a right ACL tear that required reconstruction using a bone-patellar tendon-bone graft. Her care team included orthopedic surgeon Robert Willson, MD, physical therapists Jason Marchant and Andrew Teare-Ketter, and athletic trainers Chynna Tinsley and Britteny Mitchell.
“Caroline's journey was a true test of patience and perseverance,” Marchant said. “She never allowed setbacks to define her recovery and faced obstacles by working harder. She wanted to return not just as a player, but as the strongest version of herself, and that mindset made all the difference.”
Following surgery, Ellspermann began an extensive rehabilitation program that spanned more than a year. Her treatment focused on restoring range of motion, rebuilding strength, and improving her movement awareness to prepare her for a safe return to competition. After successfully completing a return-to-sport assessment, she continued therapy to address lingering anterior knee pain through various therapeutic treatments.
Throughout her rehabilitation, Ellspermann remained focused on her goals and maintained a relentless work ethic. Her therapists noted that she routinely pushed herself at each stage of recovery and rarely settled for less than her best effort. Even when ongoing knee pain threatened to slow her progress, she remained committed to the process and continued working hard.
“Caroline's determination to overcome pain and continue progressing helped her achieve a positive outcome,” Marchant said. “There were times when she felt ready to return to the field before she had been medically cleared, but she consistently chose what was best for her long-term recovery. We're all incredibly proud of the athlete and person she has become through this experience.”
After a year of rehabilitation, Ellspermann was able to return to playing with the team. Her recovery demonstrates both the physical and mental strength that also makes her a fierce competitor on the soccer field.
