Piedmont Newton welcomes 92 student volunteers, inspiring future healthcare careers

Covington, Ga. (June 15, 2026) – Piedmont Newton welcomed 92 high school students into its 2026 Junior Volunteer Summer Program. The program, which runs from June 8 through July 24, offers hands-on hospital experience and an inside look at healthcare careers.

Participants are rising juniors and seniors in Newton County high schools along with children and grandchildren of Piedmont employees and volunteers. They are required to complete a four-hour shift each week in an assigned hospital department such as Women’s Services, Surgical Services, Physical Therapy, and the Emergency Department. Participants shadow employees and assist with tasks such as paperwork, restocking supplies, and patient transport.

“This program gives students a valuable, real-world perspective on both clinical and non-clinical roles in healthcare,” said Lindsey Petrini, CEO of Piedmont Newton. “By engaging them early, we are building a pipeline of future healthcare workers for our community.”

In addition to their work in departments, participants attend “lunch and learn” sessions featuring department leaders from Oncology, Surgical Services, Women’s Services, and Radiology/Imaging. These sessions are designed to enhance students’ understanding of healthcare careers and specialty areas within the hospital.

Students had to complete an application and interview process before being selected to join the program.

Piedmont Newton has hosted student volunteers for more than 30 years. The Junior Volunteer Program is part of the hospital’s broader commitment to workforce development, which also includes work-based learning opportunities, internships, and health career scholarships. Newton County Schools recently recognized Piedmont Newton’s efforts by naming it Partner of the Year.
