Covington, Ga. (October 14, 2026) – Piedmont Newton Hospital welcomed approximately 200 NICU graduates, family members, staff, and volunteers for its inaugural NICU reunion on September 20 at Legion Field in Covington.

The reunion honored former neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients whose strength and resilience inspired the carnival-themed celebration. Children and their families enjoyed carnival-style games, food, a photo booth, and opportunities to reconnect with care teams.

The event served as a meaningful reminder of the lasting bonds families and their care teams form during one of the most challenging experiences of their lives.

Among the “Big Top Bravehearts” celebrated were 5-month-old twins Willow and Hayzel Sells, whose journey began after they were born prematurely at 33 weeks. Their mother, Alaina, was diagnosed with preeclampsia and admitted to Piedmont Newton. Following their delivery, the twins were transferred to the NICU, where they received specialized care while their parents faced the difficult reality of returning home without them.

“The NICU team made sure I never felt out of the loop,” Sells said. “They answered our calls, sent pictures, and helped align our visits with their touch times. The way they loved our daughters and cared for our family is something I will never forget."

After two weeks in the NICU, Willow and Hayzel were healthy enough to go home, a milestone their family celebrated at the reunion.

“Seeing our former NICU patients return healthy, thriving, and full of personality is incredibly rewarding for our team,” said NICU Clinical Manager Lisa Rowe, JD, RN. "The children and parents inspire us every day, and we are honored to be part of their stories.”

Piedmont Newton's level III NICU provides specialized care for premature infants and newborns requiring advanced medical support. More than 800 babies are born at the hospital each year, with more than 150 typically receiving some level of advanced care.

Given this year’s strong turnout, plans are underway for the second annual NICU reunion.
