Piedmont Newton expands ICU, increasing access to critical care close to home

Covington, Ga. (September 10, 2026) – Piedmont Newton Hospital has expanded its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from 10 to 16 beds, increasing access to advanced critical care services for patients in Newton County and surrounding communities.
“Expanding our intensive care unit allows us to care for more patients who require the highest level of inpatient care,” said Piedmont Newton CEO Lindsey Petrini. “This investment reflects our commitment to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community.”
Piedmont Newton’s ICU provides care for patients experiencing serious illnesses and injuries, including respiratory failure, sepsis, cardiac conditions, and other complex medical needs. Patients are supported by a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, critical care nurse practitioners and physician assistants, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other specialized clinicians who provide around-the-clock care. The ICU is equipped with advanced monitoring technology and designed to support both patients and families.
“The addition of six ICU beds strengthens our ability to provide high-quality critical care close to home, allowing more patients to remain near their families while receiving the specialized treatment they need,” said ICU Medical Director Shimool Rabbani, DO. “This expansion enhances our capacity to respond to increasing demand and deliver exceptional care.”
The expansion builds on previous ICU improvements completed in 2024. Those upgrades expanded patient rooms to accommodate continuous dialysis treatment, allowing more patients to receive complex care at Piedmont Newton rather than being transferred to another facility. Additional improvements included modern flooring and a new heating and cooling system, creating a more comfortable environment for patients and families.
