Piedmont Mountainside's Radiation Oncology marks first year of high-impact cancer care

Jasper, Ga. (February 4, 2026) - One year after opening its doors, Piedmont Mountainside Hospital’s Radiation Oncology is celebrating a successful first year defined by strong patient demand, expanded operating hours and thousands of radiation treatments delivered close to home. The center, which opened on February 4, 2025, was created to bring advanced radiation therapy to patients across Pickens, Fannin, Gilmer, Gordon and Murray counties—and now, even beyond.
Growing volume and full-time operations
Since launching with a half day schedule, the center has rapidly expanded to full-day operations to meet demand. Over the past year, the team has delivered more than 3,000 radiation treatments, reflecting both community need and the center’s growing reputation for high-quality, compassionate oncology care.
Patients are now traveling not just from nearby counties, but from as far away as Murphy, NC, underscoring the regional reach the center has quickly developed.
Cutting-edge care, consistent excellence
At its opening, the facility debuted some of the most advanced radiation technology available anywhere in Georgia, including a linear accelerator, CT simulation scanner, and the Brainlab ExactTrac Dynamic system—the first in the Piedmont system to offer this precise form of radiosurgery. According to Piedmont leadership, those systems remain state-of-the-art and continue to support a broad range of treatment options, including:
- IMRT and IGRT radiation therapy
- Stereotactic brain and body treatments (SRT and SBRT)
- Tattoo less image guidance
- Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) for breast cancer patients
Patients also benefit from a comprehensive care team that includes a dietitian, speech therapist and case manager.
Exceptional care recognized by patients
Radiation oncologist Adam Nowlan, MD, continues to lead the program, earning strong praise from patients. A recent Press Ganey survey from January 2026 included this standout comment:
“Dr. Nowlan was exceptional. I’ve seen countless physicians through the years, but none of them compare with him. He’s detailed, precise, and clearly explains the ‘why’ behind his recommendations. I appreciate the care and concern he showed at a time when we were looking for answers to my condition. I can assure you, he’s the best of the best. And yes, his staff is equally caring and empathetic at a time when you really need it.”
Kayla Easley, Manager of Outpatient Services, said patient surveys consistently reflect similar themes: excellent care, outstanding communication, and an environment where patients feel comfortable despite the stress of treatment.
Looking ahead
As Piedmont Mountainside enters its second year of radiation oncology services, leaders say the focus remains on strengthening patient care, enhancing treatment capabilities, and continuing to expand access for communities across the region.
“Opening this facility one year ago was a milestone for our hospital and for this region,” said Denise Ray, CEO of Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. “What we’ve seen since then affirms why this investment mattered. Patients deserve world-class cancer care without leaving their communities, and this team has delivered that with compassion, precision, and excellence. We’re proud of the impact this center has already made and excited for what the next year will bring.”
With rising patient volumes, newly established full-day operations, and a dedicated clinical team, Piedmont Mountainside’s Radiation Oncology Center is poised to build on its momentum—further strengthening access to high-quality cancer care close to home.
