Forsyth, Ga. (June 26, 2026) - Piedmont Macon’s executive team presented Jo Turner with a Community Hero Award this afternoon for her extraordinary dedication and volunteerism in support of breast cancer patients on their cancer journey.

As a five-year breast cancer survivor herself, Turner has hand-sewn more than 5,500 specialized drain pouches that are used to help patients securely manage surgical drains following breast cancer surgery. They are vital for patients’ everyday activities, including walking, showering and getting dressed.

Many women leave the hospital following breast surgery with between one and five drains that remain in place for up to two weeks, and the pouches provide both practical support as well as a sense of dignity and independence during recovery.

Kimberly Lewis, manager of Oncology Services at Piedmont Macon, said that when Turner was a patient, she saw firsthand the importance of the pouches and asked about making some of the pouches for others.

“Jo saw a need. It’s something that seems very simple but is so vital to the recovery process, and she wanted to give back,” Lewis said. “Her simple act of kindness has made a world of difference for hundreds of women after their surgeries.”

Each one of the thousands of pouches Turner has sewn is unique.

“She relies on donated fabric and ribbon whenever possible and often purchases materials herself to ensure every patient received a thoughtfully-made pouch,” Lewis said in her nomination of Turner for the award. “Her generosity extends far beyond the sewing machine. She carefully selects fabrics and designs that reflect holidays, seasons and special occasions, bringing moments of joy and encouragement to patients facing cancer treatment and recovery.”

The pouches are used at Piedmont Macon in the Cancer Center and beyond. They’re often given to surgery patients across multiple departments.

“While the pouches serve an important practical purpose, they also represent something much deeper – a tangible reminder that someone who has walked the same path cares about their comfort, healing and well-being,” Lewis said.

Stephen J. Daughterty, CEO of Piedmont Macon Medical Center and Piedmont Macon North Hospital, said Turner embodies the spirit of what it means to be a Community Hero.

“Through her generosity, compassion and countless hours of service, she has touched the lives of hundreds of breast cancer patients, many of whom she will never meet,” Daugherty said. “Every pouch she sews provides comfort, dignity and a reminder that someone cares during a difficult time. Her selfless commitment is making a positive difference in our community, and we are honored to recognize Jo Turner with this Community Hero Award.”

The award is presented to a deserving individual who has an impact on the Middle Georgia community. After soliciting nominations from the community and hospital employees, Piedmont Macon’s executive leadership team selects a winner. Along with the award, the recipient will receive $500 for the charity or nonprofit organization of his or her choice. Turner is the 10th recipient of the award.
