Piedmont Columbus Regional’s First Friday Hero program celebrates 10 years of recognizing first responders and everyday heroes

Columbus, Ga. (June 19, 2026) - Piedmont Columbus Regional is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its First Friday Hero® program, which started in 2016 to recognize first responders and everyday heroes who go above and beyond the call of duty. Since its creation, 225 people have been recognized.

“Like healthcare, the work of a first responder is often a thankless job, and we want to make everyone aware of what they do to make our community better,” said Piedmont Columbus Director of Emergency Services Jack Rodgers.

Winners are selected monthly and are featured:

• On the Piedmont Columbus Facebook page
• On commemorative posters displayed throughout Piedmont Columbus Midtown and Northside
• The Piedmont.org website
• In the news media
• At a recognition ceremony where they receive a poster and a framed certificate

“First responders aren’t looking for accolades, but it means a lot and lifts them up when they do get recognized,” said Piedmont Columbus First Friday Hero® committee chairperson John Fellows. “Several agencies have even started a ‘wall of fame’ where they display the posters featuring their personnel that receives a First Friday Hero award.”

First Friday Hero® has expanded across the Piedmont system to six other hospitals across Georgia— allowing for more people to be recognized for their important contributions.

“What started out as a simple idea has grown into a prestigious honor,” said Piedmont Columbus CEO Scott Hill. “The term ‘First Friday Hero’ was recently federally trademarked, which is a testament to Piedmont’s continued commitment to first responders and the communities we serve.”

How to nominate

Nominations are accepted year-round. Go to Piedmont.org/FirstFridayHero to make a submission. Nominations should be related to a particular incident that occurred— like a car crash, stroke or cardiac arrest— not for a person’s years of service.
