Augusta, Ga. (January 19, 2026) – As many people dive into ambitious New Year’s fitness resolutions, Piedmont Augusta’s sports medicine specialists are seeing a seasonal spike in injuries caused by sudden increases in activity after weeks of holiday rest. Overuse injuries, strains, and joint pain are common among individuals who ramp up too quickly without proper conditioning.

“Every January, we see patients who go from little activity to intense workouts overnight,” said Robert Gambrell, MD, board-certified and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist at Piedmont Physicians Sports Medicine Augusta. “The body needs time to adapt. Gradually increasing intensity and incorporating rest days can prevent tendonitis, stress fractures, and other overuse injuries.”

Andrew Torrance, MD, a sports medicine physician and former U.S. Army doctor, agrees that pacing is key. “People often underestimate how much conditioning matters,” Dr. Torrance said. “Start with low-impact activities, focus on flexibility and strength, and listen to your body. If pain persists, don’t push through—it’s a signal to seek professional care.”

Both physicians recommend:

  • Ease into exercise: Increase activity gradually over several weeks.
  • Warm up and cool down: Stretching and mobility work reduce injury risk.
  • Crosstrain: Mix cardio, strength, and flexibility exercises to avoid repetitive strain.
  • Know the warning signs: Persistent pain, swelling, or limited range of motion should be evaluated by a sports medicine specialist.

Appointments with Dr. Gambrell and Dr. Torrance are available at Piedmont Physicians Sports Medicine Augusta, located at 465 N. Belair Road, Suite 2B, Evans, GA, and 211 High Gate Loop, Aiken, SC. Schedule online at piedmont.org or call 706.396.7500.
