Athens, Ga. (April 20, 2026) — In recognition of Sleep Apnea Awareness Week, Piedmont Athens Regional is raising awareness about sleep apnea, a common but often undiagnosed sleep disorder that can significantly impact overall health if left untreated.

Sleep apnea affects an estimated 30 million adults in the United States, yet experts believe as many as 80% of cases remain undiagnosed. The condition causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, preventing the body from getting the rest it needs and placing strain on the heart, brain and other vital organs.

“Sleep apnea is more than just loud snoring, it’s a serious medical condition that can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and daytime accidents,” said Joe Granato, manager of sleep medicine and neurophysiology services at Piedmont Athens Regional. “The good news is that sleep apnea is very treatable once it’s identified.”

Granato shared some signs and symptoms patients should watch for, such as:

  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Pauses in breathing or gasping for air during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems
  • Irritability or mood changes

Because many symptoms occur during sleep, patients are usually alerted by a bed partner or family member.

Diagnosis typically begins with a conversation with a primary care physician, who can assess risk factors and symptoms and, if appropriate, refer the patient for a sleep evaluation. Proper treatment can significantly improve sleep quality, energy levels and long‑term health outcomes.

Treatment options will vary based on diagnosis and may include:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy
  • Oral appliances
  • Lifestyle changes such as weight management or sleep positioning
  • Additional medical or surgical interventions when appropriate

Piedmont Athens Regional offers comprehensive sleep medicine services, including sleep evaluations, diagnostic testing and coordinated treatment plans personalized to each patient. The Piedmont team works closely with referring physicians to ensure patients receive care and ongoing support.

Granato encourages anyone experiencing symptoms of sleep apnea, or any concerns about their sleep health, to talk with their primary care physician. Early evaluation and treatment can lead to better sleep, improved health and a higher quality of life.
