Piedmont Athens Regional provides sports physicals for more than 620 local student athletes

Athens, Ga. (May 28, 2026) - Piedmont Athens Regional recently held its annual sports physicals day at the Oconee Health Campus, providing more than 620 student-athletes from across the Athens area with required pre-participation physicals.

The annual event supports local students by ensuring they meet medical requirements to participate in high school athletics in Georgia, in accordance with Georgia High School Association standards and guidelines.

While the event was hosted at the Piedmont Athens Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine practice, staff from various Piedmont clinical practices and service lines volunteered their time and expertise to conduct physicals, demonstrating a systemwide commitment to community health and wellness. Physicians, nurses, physical therapists and administrative team members worked together to deliver a convenient opportunity for student-athletes and their families.

“We are thrilled to have had another strong turnout for our sports physicals day,” said Katie Terrell, MS, LAT, ATC, EMT-B, athletic trainer and outreach coordinator for Piedmont Athens Regional’s sports medicine program. “Our team is passionate about supporting young athletes and ensuring they have access to the care they need to safely participate in sports. This event demonstrates our commitment to the health of our community and the future of youth sports.”

In addition to physical exams, student-athletes received education on injury prevention, nutrition and overall wellness to help them perform at their best throughout each season.

Piedmont Athens Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine offers comprehensive care including sports medicine, on-site imaging and diagnostics, orthopedic services and surgery, rehabilitation and athletic training services for 16 local high schools.
