Athens, Ga. (December 18, 2025) - Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center has been accredited by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) as an Adult Regional Clinical Program (RCP), recognizing the hospital’s commitment to providing expert care for patients living with pulmonary hypertension (PH).

The PHA accredits PH Care Centers as Regional Clinical Programs based on a center’s ability to deliver specialized, high-quality care. Accreditation is determined through a rigorous peer-review process that evaluates the qualifications of the care team, availability of specialized resources and the range of therapies offered.

“This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire team,” said Piedmont Athens Regional Chief Nursing Officer Jeremiah Bame. “Caring for patients with pulmonary hypertension takes a coordinated effort, and we’re proud to provide the resources and expertise our community needs.”

Pulmonary hypertension is a rare but serious condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, which can strain the heart and lead to complications. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, chest pain, swelling in the ankles or legs and fainting spells. Because these symptoms often mimic other conditions, early diagnosis is critical.

As a PHA-accredited Regional Clinical Program, Piedmont Athens Regional provides coordinated care and ongoing follow-up for patients with PH. Treatments often include oral and inhaled medications to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow, oxygen therapy and lifestyle modifications.

The accreditation program promotes high standards of care, supports better patient outcomes and fosters collaboration across the PH community. Accredited centers also contribute to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association Registry (PHAR), a national database designed to improve quality of life and survival for PH patients by advancing research and understanding of the disease.
