Partnership between hospital and school system helps student athletes on and off the field

Stockbridge, Ga. (July 9, 2026) - Recently, Piedmont Henry Hospital, Piedmont Orthopedics|OrthoAtlanta, and Pike County High School announced a partnership that will provide a certified athletic trainer to the high school. Several years ago, a similar agreement was put in place at several Henry County schools. In addition to being on the sidelines for athletic events, the trainers build relationships with student athletes and their families and focus on injury prevention as well as returning to play.

The partnership gives student athletes access to doctors, surgeons, and physical therapists through Piedmont Orthopedics|OrthoAtlanta. Richard Bowles, M.D. serves as the medical director for the program.

“We love taking care of athletes and feeling part of the team,” said Dr. Bowles. “Piedmont Henry is a great partner and we both share a commitment to providing high-quality care and keeping student athletes on the field.”

The service provided is often reassuring to families of student athletes, knowing they have someone on hand, as well as an entire practice, to provide a higher level of care or surgical intervention if needed.

“As a former head coach myself, I know the peace and comfort that having a full-time trainer on hand provides,” said Pike County Superintendent Shane Williamson. “We are very appreciative as we continue to build and strengthen our athletic programs.”
