HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses, with over 40 types that can infect the genital areas, mouth and throat. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States with about 13 million people, including teens, becoming infected each year. Most sexually active individuals will contract HPV at some point in their lives, often without knowing it, as many infections are asymptomatic. This virus can cause cancer later in life with 36,000 cancer cases diagnosed each year in the United States among both men and women.
