Atlanta Vibe’s Khori Louis returns to play after injury with help from Piedmont

Atlanta, Ga. (April 28, 2026) — When professional volleyball player Khori Louis needed finger surgery, she didn’t have to look far for trusted care. Working closely with Piedmont Eastside—the official health care provider of the Atlanta Vibe Professional Volleyball Team—Louis relied on the organization’s integrated orthopedic team to help her return to peak performance.
A middle blocker for the Vibe, Louis depends on precise timing, hand strength, and confidence at the net. During a mid‑season practice, that reliance was tested when a routine blocking drill took an unexpected turn.
“I was blocking, and the ball hit my finger in a weird way,” Louis said. “At first, I thought it was just a jammed finger. But once it started swelling and hurting more, we knew it might be something else.”
The Vibe’s athletic trainer, Sean Delfavero, acted quickly, sending Louis for imaging that same afternoon. X‑rays confirmed a fracture of her small finger.
A time‑sensitive decision
According to Babatunde Fariyike, MD, Atlanta Vibe team physician and orthopedic surgeon with Piedmont Orthopedics | OrthoAtlanta, the injury required careful evaluation—not only because of the fracture, but because of Louis’ position and hand dominance.
“As a middle blocker, her hands are critical,” Dr. Fariyike said. “In the general population, this type of injury can often be treated without surgery. But for Khori, who relies on her hands at the net and is a right‑handed hitter, we needed to consider long‑term performance and return‑to‑play timing.”
It’s a little finger, but a big deal in professional volleyball.
Louis said her decision to proceed with surgery was rooted in protecting her future—not just the remainder of the season.
“I was looking at it from a long‑term perspective,” she said. “I wanted to make sure this didn’t become something that lingered or came back later in my career.”
After discussing her options, Louis elected to move forward with surgery. Dr. Fariyike performed a procedure using percutaneous screws, which are headless compression screws used to stabilize the fracture through tiny incisions, supporting proper healing and faster recovery.
Care built on trust
For Louis, the decision to undergo surgery came with one critical requirement: trust.
“This was my first injury, so it was scary,” she said. “But trusting my medical team was everything. I knew they had my best interest and were focused on getting me back healthy and safely.”
That trust, Dr. Fariyike explained, plays a vital role in an athlete’s recovery.
“Surgery and rehab can be stressful for anyone, but especially for athletes,” he said. “When they know their care team understands the sport, the goals, and what return to play actually looks like, it gives them confidence and helps them fully buy into the process.”
An integrated team approach
One of the key advantages in Louis’ recovery was the coordination of care within the Piedmont Healthcare system, which enabled seamless communication among surgeons, therapists and the Vibe’s athletic training staff.
“Everything staying within one system keeps everyone aligned,” Dr. Fariyike said. “I was in constant communication with the Vibe’s athletic trainer—talking through rehab progression, splinting options, and when she was truly ready, not just medically cleared.”
Louis noticed that difference firsthand.
“As soon as it happened, everything moved quickly,” she said. “X‑rays, surgery, rehab—it was all efficient and effective. They took precautions to make sure everything was done right and that I wasn’t rushing back too soon.”
The mental side of recovery
Louis missed nearly two months of playing time, an unexpected reality for a professional athlete whose injury involved just one little finger.
“It was hard to accept at first,” she said. “I couldn’t believe my pinky would be the reason I was sitting out for almost two months.”
As rehab progressed, so did her perspective.
“It made me appreciate the little things more,” Louis said. “This injury reminded me how much we rely on our bodies and how important it is to be present, grateful, and supportive of everyone around you.”
With the guidance of her athletic trainer and regular check‑ins with her Piedmont care team, Louis gradually regained confidence in her hand.
“Once I started getting small reps again, it helped me trust myself,” she said. “The checkups and reassurance from the Piedmont team gave me confidence that I was healing the right way.”
Individualized return to play
Dr. Fariyike emphasized that while some athletes can return quickly in a protective splint, volleyball demands a more cautious approach.
“If she were a linebacker, I might have let her play earlier,” he said. “But volleyball is different. You have to individualize treatment based on the injury, the position, the athlete’s dominance, and what’s being asked of them.”
With her splint removed and mobility restored, Louis was ultimately cleared to return before the end of the season—meeting the timeline set at the beginning of her recovery.
“The timeline they gave me ended up being true,” Louis said. “I was able to rely on them every step of the way.”
Commitment beyond the court
For both athlete and physician, Louis’ experience reflects Piedmont Healthcare’s broader commitment to athlete health at every level.
“Taking care of the Atlanta Vibe is one way we connect with the community,” Dr. Fariyike said. “But the same individualized, team‑based approach applies to youth athletes, high school players, and weekend warriors.”
Louis agrees—and hopes her story resonates beyond professional sports.
“It means everything to play for a team partnered with a healthcare organization as invested as Piedmont,” she said. “It removes the doubt. You know that if something happens, you’ll be taken care of honestly, effectively, and with your best interest at heart.”
Now back on the court, Louis’ journey underscores the impact of expert orthopedic care, coordinated recovery, and trust—helping athletes return not only to play, but to perform with confidence.
