Annual mammogram leads to early breast cancer diagnosis

Cartersville, Ga. (September 21, 2026) – What began as a routine annual mammogram led to an early breast cancer diagnosis and a successful treatment journey for Cartersville resident Laurie Porter, who now encourages others not to delay preventive screenings.

Looking back, Laurie admits she once questioned whether annual mammograms were necessary.

“During COVID, I thought it was entirely unnecessary to get a mammogram,” she said. “I was healthy, in my 60s and felt fine. I wondered if I really needed one every year.”

That perspective changed during an annual visit with her gynecologist, who strongly encouraged her to continue regular breast cancer screenings.

“She assured me quite strongly that I did,” Laurie recalled. “I’ve never neglected to get a yearly mammogram since then.”

That decision proved lifesaving.

In the spring of 2025, a routine mammogram detected a growth measuring just 3 millimeters. While the finding was concerning, Laurie found comfort in knowing the abnormality had been identified at such an early stage.

“My immediate reaction was relief that it was so small and had been caught early,” she said. “I was very glad then, and I’m very glad now, that I kept up with my yearly mammograms.”

When it came time to choose a physician, Laurie wanted to remain close to home for her care. She was referred to Cathy Graham, MD, breast surgeon at Piedmont Cartersville, and immediately felt at ease.

“Dr. Graham and I clicked from the first moment we met,” Laurie said. “She never seemed rushed and always explained everything in terms I could understand. Throughout my treatment, I felt like she cared about me as a person, not just as a patient.”
