40th annual Jernigan Golf Tournament raises $251,000 to support low-dose CT screenings

Augusta, Ga. (May 12, 2026) – Piedmont Augusta Foundation raised $251,000 through its 40th annual Jernigan Memorial Golf Tournament, held May 4 at Woodside Plantation Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.

The tournament is named for Harry W. Jernigan Jr., who founded University Health Care Foundation in 1978 to support the special needs of patients. Proceeds from this year’s tournament — recognized as the oldest golf tournament in the Augusta region aside from the Masters Tournament — were designated to support the Change the Course of Lung Cancer Fund at Piedmont Augusta.

“Mr. Jernigan served faithfully as the foundation’s president until his death in 1984,” said Anne Catherine Murray, executive director of Piedmont Augusta Foundation. “We continue to ensure that his legacy lives on through this tournament. He would be proud that 100% of the proceeds stay in this community.”

Piedmont Augusta Foundation’s annual fundraiser launched with an opening celebration Sunday, May 3, at the Episcopal Day School Flowing Wells Campus Pavilion in Augusta. More than 100 patrons enjoyed a barbecue meal catered by Midtown Tavern and music by The Mason Jars. A live auction raised nearly $20,000 for the Change the Course of Lung Cancer Fund, which helps cover low-dose lung cancer screenings for underinsured and uninsured patients.

Varsha Kulkarni, MD, with Piedmont Physicians Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, shared that lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. When detected early, five-year survival rates improve significantly; however, many individuals who qualify for low-dose CT screening face barriers such as lack of insurance, underinsurance or limited access to preventive services. Low-dose CT screening is evidence-based and proven to detect lung cancer at earlier, more treatable stages, yet financial barriers continue to limit access for high-risk populations.

On Monday, May 4, 65 teams teed off across four courses at Woodside Country Club and The Reserve Club in Aiken. This year’s tournament was presented by Piedmont Augusta Volunteer Services, along with more than 80 additional sponsors who enjoyed a beautiful day on the course.

“It is clear our community understands the importance of supporting neighbors facing medical crises, and it is rare to find someone who doesn’t know a person whose life has been impacted by lung cancer,” Murray said. “We are grateful to everyone who opened their hearts and wallets to make the 40th Jernigan a wonderful experience for all.”

Congratulations to this year’s first-place teams, including Merit Flooring, Chick-fil-A, Kelly Promotional Products and Sig Cox Heating & Air.
