Nurses in Staff Development Week

Celebrating nurse development at Piedmont

In July, we celebrate Nurses in Staff Development Week, which advances the specialty practice of nursing staff development for the enhancement of high-quality healthcare outcomes. “At Piedmont, our nursing development team provides orientation, training, evaluation, education and support for our nurses and our community,” says Pam Redman, nursing development manager at Piedmont Hospital.

“Our nursing mission is to be nationally recognized as a nursing community where nursing drives excellence with compassion, competence and accountability to the community we serve and each other.” Some of Piedmont’s nursing staff development opportunities include:

  • Nursing Services Orientation:

Orientation is offered to new nurses, clerical partners and experienced clinical partners (nursing assistants) new to Piedmont.
  • RN Residency Program:

The RN Residency Program is designed for the highly-motivated new graduate nurse who has excelled clinically while attending nursing school or the experienced nurse who is interested in pursuing a new specialty. Piedmont offers residency programs in 11 specialty areas.
  • Nursing Preceptor Development:

The Mosby's Preceptor Course is a blended e-learning course designed to give healthcare facilities a decisive edge in preceptor development. Lessons focus on helping preceptors gain the teaching, communication, and evaluation skills required to effectively convey key information, roles, responsibilities, and the organization's expectations for nurses new to the hospital or specialty unit.
  • Registered Nurse Clinical Levels Program:

The Registered Nurse Clinical Levels Program is designed to support Piedmont's Professional Nursing Practice Model, the ANA and Piedmont Division of Nursing Standards of Practice, and our Mission, Vision and Values. The purpose is to encourage and support the personal and professional growth of staff nurses.
  • Nursing Scholarships:

Nursing scholarships are offered to enhance Piedmont’s ability to promote from within and to encourage employees to obtain advanced education related to nursing positions at Piedmont.
  • Nursing Awards:

Piedmont is proud to be affiliated with the DAISY Foundation and recognizes nurses monthly who are nominated by their peers, patients and families.  Additional nursing awards are offered annually during Nurses Week and include Excellence in Nursing for inpatient and outpatient, Nurse Preceptor and Resident of the year, Excellence in Nursing Leadership and Clinical Partner of the Year.
  • Nursing Councils:

Piedmont nursing promotes shared governance and supports the nursing practice model that encompasses nursing practice across the continuum - birth to death, including preventive, wellness, acute care, home care, long-term care, etc. Five core nursing councils (Leadership, Practice, Education, Patient Care Services Performance Improvement and Research) are supported by specialty area nursing councils that represent every nurse.
  • Nursing Education Fair:

Offered twice each year, the nursing education fair provides staff with an opportunity to talk with representatives from more than 20 nursing schools.
