Hereditary Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

Approximately 5-10% of prostate cancer is hereditary, which means it is caused by an inherited gene mutation that runs in a family. Genetic counselors are available at Piedmont Cancer to help determine if genetic testing for inherited prostate cancer risk would be beneficial for you and your family.

If you or a close family member (on either side of the family) have had any of the following, you may benefit from genetic counseling for prostate cancer risk:

  • Metastatic prostate cancer
  • Aggressive prostate cancer (Gleason score ≥7), as well as a family history of prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and/or pancreatic cancer
  • Aggressive prostate cancer (Gleason score ≥7) and Eastern European Jewish (Ashkenazi Jewish) ancestry
  • Prostate cancer (at any age) in three or more close relatives
  • Prostate cancer diagnosed at a young age (55 and younger) in two close relatives
