Hereditary Risk Factors for Pancreatic Cancer

Approximately 10% of pancreatic cancer is hereditary, which means it is caused by an inherited gene mutation that runs in a family. Genetic counselors are available at Piedmont Cancer to help determine if genetic testing for inherited pancreatic cancer risk would be beneficial for you and your family.

If you or a close family member (on either side of the family) have had any of the following, you may benefit from genetic counseling for pancreatic cancer risk:

  • Pancreatic cancer in two or more close relatives
  • Pancreatic cancer, as well as a family history of breast, ovarian, prostate, colon, uterine, stomach, and/or other cancers
  • Pancreatic cancer in an individual who is Ashkenazi Jewish (Eastern European Jewish)
  • Pancreatic cancer and a personal or family history of melanoma
