Piedmont Oncology Provides Personalized Care for GYN Cancer

Planning for postoperative treatment begins as soon as gynecologic cancer has been diagnosed. Gynecologic oncologists at Piedmont Oncology are experts in determining the best approach to help patients with a range of treatment approaches.

We take a team approach to caring for patients with gynecologic cancer. Our multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and navigators work together to provide personalized treatment for each patient. Treatment planning conferences are used to provide patients with a treatment recommendation.

As a certified member in MD Anderson Cancer Network®, a program of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Piedmont Oncology has access to oncology specialist consultations from clinical experts at the top research cancer center in the U.S.

Surgical Treatment for Cancer Removal

Surgery is often the first step in the treatment of gynecologic cancer. The goal of surgery is to remove the entire tumor in an attempt to eradicate the cancer. A second benefit derived from removing the tumor is that the doctor gets a much more accurate analysis of the extent and aggressiveness of the cancer. Surgery is performed by a gynecologic oncologist who specializes in these types of cancer, including ovarian, uterine or cervical.

Radiation Therapy Expertise at Piedmont Oncology

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage the DNA of cancer cells. The goal is to eradicate tumor cells that could be left behind after the surgery. Piedmont radiation oncologists prescribe and administer the treatment using the latest technology.

Chemotherapy Treatments

Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to kill tumor cells. Sometimes it is given prior to surgery to reduce the size of the tumor. If there is concern that cancer is still present after surgery or radiation therapy, chemotherapy can be given to kill remaining cancer cells. Chemotherapy can also be used to slow the growth of an advanced tumor that has metastasized or spread to other parts of the body.

Advanced targeted chemotherapy treatments are available at Piedmont Cancer. As one of only a few centers in Georgia to provide hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) treatment, Piedmont cancer specialists are able to deliver highly concentrated chemotherapy directly to cancer cells within the abdomen. As leaders in this cutting-edge field of cancer treatment, our specialists performed the first laproscopic HIPEC procedure for ovarian cancer.
