Breast Cancer Diagnosis Expertise

Piedmont Cancer is dedicated to the rapid diagnosis of suspected breast cancer. Breast radiologists and breast surgeons at Piedmont are experts in breast diagnosis, with national accreditation by the American College of Radiology in every diagnostic capability, including:

  • Breast MRI
  • Breast Ultrasound
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Mammography
  • Bone Scan
  • PET
  • Stereotactic Biopsy
  • MRI-guided Biopsy

Diagnostic Mammogram

Piedmont offers advanced imaging techniques, including 3D mammography (or tomosynthesis), which improves diagnostic accuracy.

Breast Ultrasound

Using high-frequency sound waves, a breast ultrasound is used for additional analysis of an abnormality and can be used to determine an accurate location of the lesion during biopsy.

Advanced Breast MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used in highly selected situations to provide images with more detail than mammograms, especially when the breast tissue is more dense than usual.

Breast Biopsy

Once the presence of abnormal tissue is confirmed, a biopsy is performed to obtain tissue for analysis by one of Piedmont’s expert pathologists. The procedure involves local anesthetic and a small incision in the skin. Core breast biopsies can be done by palpation, ultrasound, x-ray (stereo) or MRI guided.

Pathology Report

The analysis of the biopsy tissue shows whether breast cancer is present or not. A board-certified Piedmont pathologist examines the tissue and reports are sent directly to the doctor who performed the biopsy.
