Athens, Ga. (November 13, 2025) — Zavien Hunter, a varsity football player at Clarke Central High School, has been named Athlete of the Month for November by Piedmont Athens Regional Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic.
Hunter was diagnosed with a medial meniscus tear earlier in the season, sidelining him for much of the year. Under the care of fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon Robert Willson, M.D., physical therapist Mason Moore, and athletic trainers Ty Irmler and Joey Twaddell, Hunter has shown dedication to his recovery and his team.
His rehabilitation has followed a progressive treatment plan focused on improving range of motion, strengthening the quadriceps, balance training and plyometric exercises. Twaddell said Hunter has approached each phase of recovery with discipline and determination.
“Early in his rehab, Zavien was understandably discouraged about missing most of his season,” Twaddell said. “But his commitment never wavered. He’s been consistently present for rehab sessions both in the athletic training room and at the PT clinic. He’s also continued to attend practices and games, supporting his teammates every step of the way.”
Hunter’s perseverance and team spirit reflect the values celebrated by the Athlete of the Month program. Piedmont Athens Regional Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Clinic is proud to support student-athletes like Hunter who demonstrate resilience, leadership and a passion for their sport — even in the face of adversity.
“The athletes we support are truly exceptional, overcoming significant challenges to return to their sports after injuries or illnesses,” said Katie Terrell, athletic trainer and outreach coordinator for the hospital’s sports medicine program. “This award was established to recognize their dedication and hard work in our sports medicine rehab program. We’re delighted to work with student-athletes from middle school through college. Our athletic trainers and therapists, with their advanced training in sports medicine, are committed to helping student-athletes stay active and excel in their sports.”
As Athlete of the Month, Hunter received a certificate and is now featured at the Orthopedic Sports Medicine facility on Piedmont’s Oconee Health Campus in Watkinsville, Ga.
Piedmont is proud to serve student-athletes across the state of Georgia and is the official health care provider for the University of Georgia Athletic Association.
