Athens, Ga. (November 5, 2025) – Internal medicine residents from Piedmont Athens Regional earned top awards at the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) annual meeting, held recently in Atlanta.
In the Doctors’ Dilemma competition, a Jeopardy-style medical knowledge contest, the team of Drs Ottun, M.D., Alex Kumi, M.D., Dylan Hewlett, M.D., George Annan, M.D., and Eunice Omeludike, M.D., took first place out of the 20 residency programs that competed. The team also set a record-breaking score of 10,499 points, far surpassing the second-place score of 2,600. The team will represent the state of Georgia in the national competition to be held in San Francisco in April 2026.This marks the fifth time Piedmont Athens residents have won this competition out of the eight times they have competed.
In the podium presentation Abdul-Rahaman Ottun, M.D., won first place and Prince Darko, M.D. earned third place in the same category. In the poster presentation category. Grace Ogunkoya, M.D., placed second. All three residents will present at the national ACP meeting next year.
Jorge Pimentel, M.D., received the 'Outstanding Resident in Volunteerism and Advocacy' award, which honors internal medicine residents in Georgia for their dedication to community service and volunteerism.
These residents have been under the tutelage of their program director’s Drs Catherine Apaloo and James Pippim for the past nine years. The program has trained over 100 residents, seventy percent of whom have stayed in state and are practicing here in Georgia.
“These residents exemplify the excellence and dedication we strive for in our program,” said Laurel Murrow, M.D., program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Piedmont Athens Regional. “We’re proud to see their hard work recognized at the state level.”
Residents at Piedmont Athens Regional work under the direct supervision of attending physicians, practicing medicine at the 427-bed hospital and the outpatient Community Care Clinics.
