Athens, Ga. (November 13, 2023) – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 34 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes. It is also estimated that another one in five people doesn’t know that they have diabetes, putting themselves at higher risk of an early death due to complications of an uncontrolled disease. The Piedmont Athens Regional Diabetes Resource Center provides tools and support to patients managing diabetes, allowing them to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

The Piedmont Athens Regional Diabetes Resource Center has appointments available Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with early and late appointments available by request. Certified diabetes educators at the center provide instruction in diabetes self-management education, which includes individual and group instruction on topics such as meal planning, blood glucose testing, exercise, medications, preventing complications, and risk reduction. Educators also teach insulin pump and glucose sensor training.

Additional programs available through the center are medical nutrition therapy, where a registered dietitian offers basic diabetes nutrition instruction and, where needed, diet review and specialized diet instruction. Individuals diagnosed with pre-diabetes can work with center educators on individualized meal and exercise planning to promote healthy lifestyle changes. There are even diabetes education sessions for pregnant women.
