Piedmont Augusta Vascular Surgeon is the Top Enroller in National Study Monitoring Outcomes of Pulmonary Embolism Patients

Augusta, Ga. (November 13, 2023) – Piedmont Augusta Vascular Surgeon Houman Tamaddon, M.D., the regional standout in the treatment of pulmonary embolism patients, is leading the area in a national study on pulmonary embolism (PE) patients treated with medical thrombectomy.

Piedmont Augusta is participating in the Penumbra-sponsored STRIKE-PE study evaluating acute and long-term outcomes in intermediate and high-risk (PE) patients treated with the Indigo™ Aspiration System. Dr. Tamaddon, vascular surgeon and endovascular specialist, is leading the research team.

STRIKE-PE is a study to collect data to help answer questions related to PE patient outcomes. The goal of the study is to evaluate, study and record the functionality and quality of life of PE patients before their PE, at hospital discharge, 90-day post-discharge and one-year post-discharge. No other mechanical thrombectomy study has followed patients long-term.

Additional information to be obtained is the best diagnostic imaging tool, risk stratification, treatment options and best care management for patients with intermediate and high-risk PE.

The research team continues to admit PE patients into the study who fit the following criteria:

  • 18+ years old
  • Symptoms < 14 days
  • RV/LV ration > 0.9
  • Submassive or massive PE
  • Frontline endovascular treatment with Indigo TM Aspiration System

For enrollment information, please contact the STRIKE-PE Research Team at 706-724-2463
