Pedaling for Parkinson’s Program Aims to Slow Symptoms

Fayetteville, Ga. (August 1, 2023) – Every Monday and Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m., the Piedmont Wellness Center hosts Pedaling for Parkinson’s, a special class designed to help delay the progression of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Certified instructors lead the class through a warm-up, cycling to some high-energy music, and a cool down period with some stretching.

“Cycling at the recommended cadence of 80 to 90 RPMs has been shown to improve motor function in folks with Parkinson’s,” said instructor Rhonda Tingle. “Exercise in general also improves mood and creates a sense of well-being for all participants.”

Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes uncontrollable movements, like tremors or difficulty with coordination. Symptoms tend to worsen over time and can lead to difficulty with movement, speech, sleep, and more.

Participants of Pedaling for Parkinson’s must have a physician’s clearance prior to enrolling in the class.

“This class can be very beneficial,” said Evan Johnson, M.D., a neurologist at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. “I believe it empowers people with Parkinson’s and can help improve their quality of life.”

Pedaling for Parkinson’s is available to all members of the Piedmont Wellness Center. Non-members can purchase a punch pass for eight classes for $90 (one-month expiration). Punch passes can only be used on days that they Pedaling for Parkinson’s classes are run, but does give them full access to the center during these visits as well as attending the class.
